PGCPS APIP Spotlight 2017-2018 | Bobby Coates


Born, raised and educated (K-12) in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Bobby Joe Coates, Jr. matriculated to Washington, DC and attended the University of the District of Columbia and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Health Education in 1995.  Upon graduation, he started his career in education at Prince George's County Public Schools as a teacher at Green Valley Elementary School.

In 2000, he had an opportunity to teach and coach in Arlington Public Schools.  He taught Physical Education and Health and was a head tennis and track coach at APS for four years.  In 2004, he got an opportunity to teach and coach (basketball and golf) in the Atlanta, GA area for five years.  While working in Georgia, he participated in an off-campus Master's program and received a Masters in Administration (MSA) from Central Michigan University.

In 2009, Bobby relocated back to Maryland and PGCPS.  He began training as an administrator at Oxon Hill ES and became a part of the Admin team as well as a teacher.  While at Oxon Hill he was a member of the Leadership Team, Emergency Team,  Creative Arts Chair, PBIS Chair, and Teacher-In-Charge.  In 2010, he received his Principal Certification from California (PA) University.  Currently, he serves as an Assistant Principal at Oxon Hill ES.

Bobby is married with four children (three enrolled in PGCPS). He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Inc. Washington (DC) Alumni, and is a member of the Metropolitan Kappa (DC) Golf League.  Bobby is a member of Ebenezer A.M.E. and Jordan River Ministries.
